Description

Tallink Group, an Estonian maritime transport company, announced that up to 145 employees will be laid off at its subsidiary Tallink Latvija in Latvia. The collective dismissal process began around early September 2020 and is expected to conclude within the same month. The job cuts are a direct consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has severely reduced passenger traffic and led to travel restrictions across Estonia and neighboring countries.

Without sufficient government support, Tallink has had to streamline its operations to maintain viability. Tallink is consulting with several social partners, including the Estonian unemployment insurance fund, the Independent Shipping Workers Union, Latvia’s Maritime Trade Union and relevant ministries of labor. Negotiations are ongoing to address severance terms and potential reemployment opportunities.
