European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Espersen, a Danish fish-processing company, is restructuring its operations in Koszalin. The company plans to close and sell its primary processing facility in the city, affecting around 650-700 production workers. The consultation process began in mid-2026, with the first 227 employees receiving dismissal notices by the end of August, effective from November 2026. Further reductions may follow depending on the outcome of the sale process. Espersen will continue production at its second Koszalin site.
According to the company, the decision reflects long-term changes in the whitefish processing market. Espersen cited reduced cod and haddock quotas.
The affected workforce consists mainly of production employees. Espersen has indicated that a transfer of ownership would be preferable, as it could preserve part of the existing employment base. The Koszalin District Labour Office (PUP) has been supporting affected workers and monitoring the collective redundancy process. Local authorities, including the Mayor of Koszalin, have pledged support in identifying potential investors.
Espersen is one of Europe's largest fish processors. The company operates facilities in Poland, Denmark, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. In Koszalin, it has historically been one of the region's largest employers, with total employment fluctuating between 1,300 and 2,000 workers.
