European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Sibanye Stillwater, a South African nickel refining company, has announced the closure of its Sandouville plant near Le Havre in France, which will result in the redundancy of over 100 employees. The first wave of departures is scheduled for January as part of a collective redundancy plan.
This follows concerns about the plant's viability and the absence of investors for the planned battery-recycling project, which could have revitalised operations at the site. The closure is driven by commercial challenges, including the lack of buyers for the site after a temporary halt in production, as well as broader industry uncertainty.
Trade unions are actively involved in the case. CGT representative Nicolas Quitard and CFE-CGC representative Emmanuel Leprevost criticised the closure announcement and expressed concern over the loss of industrial expertise.
