European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Slovalco, a Slovak aluminium producer, announced the reactivation of its Žiari nad Hronom plant, aiming to restore up to 500 jobs from the current 200. The restructuring begins in late August 2026 and will gradually bring production back to full capacity.
The initial closure and subsequent reactivation are driven by energy prices, with the company's aluminium furnaces being the largest electricity consumer in Slovakia. The project includes a ten-year power purchase agreement with Vodohospodárska výstavba, which operates hydroelectric plants, together with generous state subsidies tied to emission quota repayments and favourable electricity pricing. The job creation will concentrate solely in Žiari nad Hronom, Slovakia. The company expects to bring back roughly 300 positions, bringing employment at the site from 200 to 500 as operations scale up. The plant is aiming to grow employment from the current 200 to as many as 500 if the restart is successful.
