Description
Rakuten France, a Japanese-owned e-commerce platform, announced the shutdown of its marketplace, rendering its 180 employees redundant. Additionally, 2,500 sellers will be impacted. Online retail has been under intense competition from foreign platforms with low prices, and the development of second-hand e-commerce.
Despite two serious takeover offers, the management deemed they were not sufficient. One of the takeover companies criticised that decision heavily. In 2010, the Japanese group had bought the platform, previously known under the name PriceMinister.
