European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Evonik, a German specialty chemicals company, announced that it will cut 3,200 jobs worldwide by the end of 2029, including 2,150 in Germany. The planned workforce reduction in Germany was recorded in the ERM database following the company's announcement on 18 June 2026.Evonik 2026 - DE
The announced measures include the closure of the company's polyester production plant in Witten in 2027, affecting its 266 employees. Other identified job losses include 45 positions at the Marl site in Germany and 35 positions in Shanghai, China.
The restructuring is driven by structural disadvantages affecting European production, weak market demand and increasing international competition. According to the company, the measures are part of a broader efficiency programme focused on digitalisation, process optimisation and outsourcing, while offshoring options are also under consideration.
