European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Capgemini, a French IT services group operating in Germany, has announced substantial job cuts across several German locations as a result of the ongoing Volkswagen crisis.
The company plans to reduce its workforce at its Wolfsburg-Warmenau site from 306 employees to 74, resulting in the loss of 232 jobs, while a further 202 positions are to be cut in Munich. Entire sites in Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Gaimersheim are scheduled to close, and the workforce in Stuttgart will be reduced by half to around 79 employees.
The restructuring is being driven by a sharp decline in demand from Volkswagen for Capgemini's services. Volkswagen also recently announced that they will cut 35,000 jobs in Germany by the end of 2030 Volkswagen 2024 - DE.
Trade union IG Metall has organised resistance at the Wolfsburg site. The union is seeking talks with the company and aims to preserve as many jobs as possible. The full extent of the redundancies and the way in which the measures will be implemented have yet to be finalised.
Capgemini employs more than 420,000 people worldwide.
