Description
Kelvion, a German manufacturer of heat exchangers, announced the closure of its plant in Nobitz-Wilchwitz, Altenburger Land, which will eliminate approximately 250 jobs by the end of 2026. The company had already introduced short-time work in 2024 due to a lack of orders and had laid off 90 employees, bringing the total jobs lost up to 340. The company will relocate production to its site in Sarstedt, Lower Saxony.
The decision comes amid rising revenues but aims to streamline operations and focus resources on key markets. The shutdown will reduce employment at the Nobitz-Wilchwitz site, while the Sarstedt location will absorb the production and remain operational.
Employees and labour unions were surprised about the measure. The unions announced to protest the lay-offs and to attempt to discuss alternative solutions to direct dismissals.
The site in Sarstedt will be receive sizeable investments and will be expanded into a European competence centre for plate heat exchangers. The brazed plate heat exchangers manufactured in Nobitz are installed in heat pumps, wind turbines and data centres.
