European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Lieken, a German bakery manufacturer, announced the closure of its Essen plant, resulting in about 120 job cuts. The closure was announced in early May 2026 and is implemented by the end of 2026.
The plant has been scheduled for closure as part of a restructuring aimed at streamlining operations. Lieken has faced declining sales and rising costs.
The company emphasised that it wants to carry out the job cuts in a socially responsible way. Severance payments are planned. However, the trade union NGG has expressed concerns about the sudden shutdown and has called for transparent dialogue with management. The closure announcement was especially controversial because it came while the Essen plant had no active works council, leaving employees without formal representation until new elections on 9 June.
Lieken employs around 3,000 people.
