Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Solvay is a Belgian chemical group that operates in 63 countries with a total workforce of over 21,000 employees. In 2022, it announced the relocation of the production of its innovative green solvent from China to its site in Melle, Deux-Sèvres, France. The precise amount of the investment remains undisclosed, but it is estimated to be several million euros, according to the site's management. The project received support from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, which granted a subsidy of 640,000 euros for the relocation. Solvay aims to increase the site's capacity by 20%. The investment involves developing the seventh production workshop and creating direct and indirect job opportunities. The total workforce at the Melle site, which currently employs 145 people, is expected to increase, with approximately ten new hires planned. The decision to relocate production is driven by Solvay's commitment to sustainability and the reduction of the carbon footprint associated with material transport. The relocation is part of Solvay's strategy to bring production closer to its European customers.
