Cadena Q, one of Spain’s long-standing affordable clothing retailers, has announced its definitive closure after a year in insolvency proceedings. The decision will result in the shutdown of its 32 remaining stores and the dismissal of 140 employees. According to union sources, court-appointed administrators concluded that the company was no longer economically viable. An earlier restructuring last year had already reduced the workforce by half, affecting around 150 of the then 300 employees.
Founded in 1965, Cadena Q built its reputation on competitively priced clothing for the whole family, operating primarily in neighbourhood locations of medium-sized cities. At its peak in 2010, the chain operated 105 outlets across Spain, including company-owned stores, franchises and concessions. However, declining footfall, the rapid growth of e-commerce and mounting competition from large international retailers progressively eroded its market position. The closure reflects wider structural challenges within the fashion retail sector.
