Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
JSW KOKS, is closing in Zabrze, Śląskie Voivodeship, Poland, putting more than 200 jobs at risk.
The potential restructuring is linked to difficult market conditions in the coke and steel sectors, including volatile raw material prices, declining demand and rising operating costs; the company is analysing different scenarios for the future of the plant, which could lead to its liquidation.
Specific job reduction measures have not yet been announced, but the closure of the plant would result in redundancies affecting the entire workforce.
Trade unions, including Solidarność 80, have strongly opposed the plans and announced protests and possible hunger strikes, while local authorities warn that the shutdown could also affect the city’s heat supply infrastructure.
JSW KOKS is part of the Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa Group and is one of the largest coke producers in Europe, supplying coke primarily to the steel industry.
