Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The logistics company XPO Transport Solutions Spain has announced a nationwide Employment Redundancy File (ERE) affecting 217 employees, and extended to several facilities in Spain. The company justifies the measure by citing economic losses over the past three years, which it attributes to the ongoing crisis in the automotive sector, a key client industry for its operations.
In this sense, XPO maintains that the downturn in the automotive market and the uncertainty affecting its clients have directly impacted its business performance, leading to sustained financial losses within its Transport Solutions division. However, workers and union representatives argue that alternative solutions should be explored before implementing job cuts, highlighting the potential social and economic impact of the dismissals at local and national level.
