Description
Považský cukor, a Slovak sugar producer operating in the food manufacturing sector and owned by the German group Nordzucker, has announced approximately 90 job cuts at its production plant in Trenčianska Teplá, Slovakia. The restructuring concerns the termination of sugar production at the site, with redundancies affecting mainly production and technical staff as operations are wound down during 2025.
The decision forms part of Nordzucker’s strategic transformation and the consolidation of its production network in response to market conditions in the European sugar sector. The job losses relate primarily to permanent positions linked directly to processing activities, while administrative and support functions may be adjusted accordingly as production ceases.
The redundancies are expected to be implemented through direct dismissals in line with Slovak labour legislation. The company has initiated the redundancy procedure, and indirect employment effects may arise among seasonal workers, agricultural contractors and local suppliers connected to the sugar campaign.
Public representatives have acknowledged the negative impact on employment in the Trenčín region, noting that the closure further reduces domestic sugar production capacity. Discussions have focused on mitigating the social consequences and supporting the affected workforce through labour office services.
Považský cukor has been one of the country’s longstanding sugar producers, and following the closure, only one sugar manufacturing plant will remain operational in Slovakia.
