Description

Verallia Deutschland, the German subsidiary of the French glass-production Group Verallia, is evaluating the closure of its Essen plant in Germany, which could lead to roughly 300 job cuts.

Production could then be relocated to the three other German sites. The company cites a sustained downturn in the European market and a weaker demand for glass packaging, partly driven by declining alcohol consumption in Europe, as the main reason for the potential plant closure. Verallia says that social dialogue will be central to the process and that it intends to work closely with employee representatives and trade unions to support affected staff.

Verallia Deutschland employs 1,500 people across four German sites and is part of the international Verallia Group that specialises in glass packaging for the food industry. The group has also announced that it will close the French site Châteaubernard in Charente, affecting 60 employees, which was registered by the ERM events database (Verallia 2026 – FR) (https://apps.eurofound.europa.eu/restructuring-events/detail/204266).
