Description
The Vion Food Group, the Dutch food‑processing company, has announced the permanent closure of its cattle‑slaughter facility in Hilden, Germany, a move that will result in the loss of around 160 jobs. The restructuring process will begin latest with the plant’s scheduled shutdown on 28 February 2026.
The company cites ongoing structural changes in the market and the resulting need for further consolidation as the reasons behind the decision.
Vion has entered into consultations with the works council and intends to negotiate an interest settlement and social plan with employee representatives. The company also states that it is reviewing alternative employment opportunities for the affected staff, with around 30 employees having already received offers. However, the union has expressed doubts that many workers will take up these opportunities.
Vion is a significant player in the meat‑processing industry. The company operates a total of 17 production facilities in Germany and the Netherlands and employs around 8,400 people.
