Description
Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB), Austria’s state-owned railway operator active in passenger and freight transport, announced plans to create new jobs and expand training programmes across several regions of the country.
In the federal state of Salzburg, the company plans to create around 240 jobs during the current year. ÖBB also announced a broader recruitment campaign in eastern Austria, where approximately 2,380 employees are expected to be hired throughout 2026, including train drivers, conductors, shunting staff and traffic controllers. In addition, the company plans to recruit around 360 new employees in Styria and 235 employees in Carinthia during 2026.
Many of the positions will be filled through internal training programmes, with paid training from the first day, aimed at addressing labour shortages in operational railway occupations and supporting workforce renewal. The job creation will be implemented through direct recruitment and internal training programmes, targeting both skilled workers and career changers. Government representatives and the Federal Ministry responsible for mobility welcomed the measures, highlighting their contribution to employment, vocational training and workforce development in the rail sector.
ÖBB operates nationwide rail passenger and freight services and offers around 130 occupational profiles, employing tens of thousands of staff across Austria. The company regularly recruits and trains operational personnel to maintain and expand rail services.
