Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Lissmac Maschinenbau, the German machinery manufacturer, has carried out significant job cuts in Bad Wurzach (Baden-Württemberg).
The company had announced in November 2025 that around 50 positions would be eliminated, but the final number has risen to roughly 60. While part of the reduction was achieved through a voluntary program, Lissmac also issued compulsory redundancies.
Management cited high costs, weakened demand, and geopolitical trade conditions as key reasons for the restructuring. Following negotiations with the works council, the company implemented a social plan and completed the process at the beginning of February 2026.
Lissmac now aims to stabilise operations and strengthen its focus on technically advanced machinery. The workforce in Bad Wurzach has fallen from 330 to 270 employees as a result of the restructuring.
