Description

Cartonajes Internacionales has announced the closure of its factories in Valls and Montblanc (Tarragona), a decision that will result in the dismissal of 200 workers through an Employment Redundancy File (ERE). The company, a subsidiary of the US-based International Paper, justifies the move as part of a broader review of its operations in Europe, aimed at improving efficiency and adapting its industrial structure to changing market and customer needs.

Trade unions have strongly opposed the decision, accusing the multinational of carrying out a covert relocation strategy. According to union representatives, the closures are not driven by a lack of economic viability, especially given that the packaging sector is currently expanding, supported by European regulations that promote cardboard packaging as plastic is phased out. Trade Union representatives suggest that, in recent months, customer orders have been deliberately diverted to other plants within the group to artificially reduce workloads in Tarragona factories and justify their closure.
