Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Agribur, a citrus company based in Vall d'Uixó, is currently undergoing a bankruptcy process affecting its entire workforce of 433 employees.
A judicial edict dated 28 January opens a one-month period for creditors to submit claims, requiring legal representation except for workers and public entities. Agribur’s debt is estimated at around €30 million, leading to the activation of an Employment Redundancy File (ERE). Among the creditors are banks, employees, and local farmers.
Before entering crisis, Agribur processed about 30 million kilos of citrus annually. According to a citrus representative organisation, Agribur’s current financial collapse stems from heavy investments to expand production, financed through non-traditional lending sources, which ultimately proved unsustainable amid falling demand and growing volatility in the Castellón citrus sector.
