Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Somfy Group, world leader in building households automation systems, has just announced a redundancy plan involving the loss of 350 jobs in France and 550 jobs worldwide. Somfy's operations are located in the Haute-Savoie region. The R&D centre in Cluses is expected to be the department most affected by these measures.
According to management, this redundancy plan is considered essential to cope with weak market dynamics. Although the group is in a healthy financial position with a turnover of €1.5 billion in 2024, it is experiencing stagnating volumes and increased international competition.
Negotiations with trade unions are due to begin in February 2026 and are expected to last four months, with voluntary redundancies being the stated priority.
