Description
Azteca Cerámica, an historic tile manufacturer founded in 1962 and based in l’Alcora (Castellón), has agreed to an Employment Redundancy File (ERE) affecting its 118 employees, marking the final step toward the company’s liquidation. The agreement, reached between management and unions guarantees workers the maximum legal severance compensation (20 days per year worked, up to 12 months’ pay) without resorting to the Wage Guarantee Fund (FOGASA).
The company had already suspended production and filed for insolvency last summer under the supervision of Castellón’s Commercial Court No. 1.
Azteca’s collapse reflects the severe crisis that has plagued Spain’s ceramic sector since the 2022 energy cost surge, followed by a sharp decline in global demand that hit small and medium-sized producers hardest. The delayed and insufficient government aid to gas-intensive industries (covering barely 5% of the sector’s €1.8 million euros in extra energy costs) further exacerbated the situation.
