Description
Bayer, a German agro‑chemical company, announced that it will cut about 200 jobs at its Dormagen pesticide plant in Germany as part of a restructuring of its Crop Science division that will conclude by 2028. The company will close its Frankfurt site by the end of 2028, with roughly 500 workers expected to be transferred to other German locations. The restructuring is aimed at consolidating production in Dormagen and centralising research in Monheim to streamline operations in the face of mounting competition.
The restructuring is driven primarily by intense competition from low‑cost generic pesticides produced in Asia, whose lower prices are eroding Bayer’s market share and profitability. Additional pressures cited include increasing regulatory restrictions and national export barriers.
Dormagen employs almost 1,200 people, of whom about 200 will lose their positions. The Frankfurt site, with roughly 500 staff, will be shut down, with those employees will be relocated to Dormagen, Knapsack, or Monheim. The restructuring will end in 2028, with the plant’s production of generic active ingredients being discontinued as part of the broader strategy.
Bayer has indicated that it will seek viable solutions with workers’ representatives as part of the transition.
