Description

Byggmester Markhus, a Norwegian construction firm based in Bergen, announced at least around 100 job cuts as it filed for bankruptcy, affecting all its employees and leading to a stop in ongoing building projects. The bankruptcy was attributed to a VAT claim from the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten) tied to the period before the company’s 2025 reconstruction, which the firm and its lawyer said created a sharply increased capital need and came unexpectedly on 23 December 2025. The job losses are a consequence of the bankruptcy process, with employees called to an all-hands meeting on January 6th. An employee representative stated that colleagues were being hit hard by the sudden loss of work, while the tax authority reiterated that it must ensure correct payment and equal treatment and could not comment on the specific case due to confidentiality rules.

Established in 1986 (operating as K. Markhus & Sønn until 2002), the company has mainly delivered medium and large housing projects and commercial buildings, and had faced sustained financial difficulties.
