Description
Hydro initiated closure procedures for its Feltre facility, affecting approximately 115 employees, part of European consolidation closing five plants across 730 workers in Italy, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. Norsk Hydro 2025 - World Workers organised permanent blockades from November 27, preventing vehicle entry/exit, following Board decisions announced without warning.
The Norwegian aluminium extrusion leader cited deep performance analysis and current market context to guarantee sustainability and strengthen long-term European business competitiveness. The reorganisation targets eight extrusion presses, multiple value-added processes, and three recycling units, leaving Hydro with 28 extrusion plants, five recycling facilities, and approximately 7,000 European employees.
Trade unions FIOM, CGIL Belluno and FIM Belluno-Treviso declared 48-hour strikes on 27-28 November, covering all shifts. Unions characterised the announcement as "extremely serious and totally unacceptable," representing a direct attack on workers, families, and territorial economic-social fabric, refusing to accept years of professionalism and production "cancelled with a pen stroke for logic ignoring human and social enterprise value."
Workers had struck November 22, protesting the sudden termination of 20 temporary contracts without notice. Unions interpreted this as signaling deeper crisis beyond temporary order declines claimed by management—fears confirmed by Board decisions. December 3, Confindustria Feltre joint examination meeting demanded clarity on motivations and immediate negotiating table opening, identifying closure alternatives.
On December 16 a technical table convened ownership, unions, and institutions seeking alternative solutions. Venice mayor urged the company to avoid collective dismissal procedures before exhaustively exploring alternatives, including a potential third-party sale.
