Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall inaugurated its new plant in Szeged. The investment will create 300 new high-skill jobs by the end of 2030. At the time of the inauguration, only part of the production lines had already been installed, and the site had about 60 employees.
The production site will serve as a hub for the firm’s automotive business unit and will also be the first hybrid site outside Germany where both civil and defence products are manufactured. The plant will mainly produce electrical components and products related to the use of hydrogen in transport and energy generation. This transfer of civilian production to outside Germany enables the Rheinmetall’s German sites to focus on defence production.
The Rheinmetall plant has been built in the same industrial park as the BYD production site. However, the management does not expect insurmountable labour shortages, although some frictions may arise in relation to a few specialised roles.
Unlike the other three Rheinmetall sites in Hungary, this plant is entirely owned by the German company through a consortium of its various Hungarian subsidiaries.
The investment cost was €69 million, about 45% of which was provided by the Hungarian government in the form a non-refundable grant.
