Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Helvetia Baloise, the Swiss insurance group, has announced that it will cut between 2,000 and 2,600 jobs worldwide by 2028.
The reductions will primarily affect operations in Switzerland, where 1,400 to 1,800 positions are expected to be eliminated, mainly at the group headquarters and local business units. In Germany, a further 260 to 330 jobs will be cut Helvetia Baloise 2025-DE . The company is relying on natural attrition and early retirement, but there will also be layoffs. The company aims to increase its profitability and achieve annual cost reductions of 350 million Swiss francs, two-thirds of which are tied to personnel costs.
Helvetia and Baloise merged in December 2025; Helvetia Baloise is now Switzerland’s largest multi-line insurer and one of the top ten insurance providers in Europe. The group employs around 22,000 employees worldwide, primarily in Europe (Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, and France), with additional presence in Latin America and Asia.
