Description

UNICEF will relocate approximately 300 positions from its Geneva regional office to Rome, retaining only around 100 jobs focused on the Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS). The restructuring follows 20% funding reductions over four years compared to 2024 levels due to decreased foreign aid spending by the US and major European donors.

The UN children's agency announced relocating at least 70% of staff from Geneva and New York headquarters to lower-cost duty stations including Rome, Budapest, Florence, Istanbul, Brussels, and Valencia. New York remains global headquarters, while Geneva will concentrate on global advocacy and coordination functions.

Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed the relocations Wednesday following Tribune de Genève reporting, noting discussions had occurred for some time regarding whether positions would transfer to Rome or Spain. Staff received official confirmation Tuesday of the moves affecting UNICEF's European and Central Asia regional office.
