Description

Voestalpine, an Austrian steel producer operating in the high-performance metals sector, announced the reduction of 340 positions, including 280 permanent and 60 temporary jobs, at its Kindberg and Mürzzuschlag plants in Styria.

The decision is driven by persistently high US tariffs on steel, elevated energy and labour costs, and insufficient EU quota regulations, which have reduced the profitability of certain product lines. At the Mürzzuschlag site, the workforce will be cut by approximately a quarter, while the plant remains operational with a focus on specialised products. Kindberg will reduce operations from three shifts to two, leading to significant job losses in production. The restructuring primarily affects production workers in these two facilities.

A social plan is being developed in coordination with the works council, aiming to provide alternative employment opportunities within the group and support for skill development.

Voestalpine is part of the global Voestalpine Group, employing thousands worldwide, and the affected sites are integral to Austria’s steel and metal production industry.
