Description

Erasteel, the French steel and metal manufacturer, has announced a restructuring that will cut 280 jobs in Europe.

The layoffs will mainly affect employees in France and Sweden. So far, it has been announced that 190 positions will be cut at its Commentry plant, France Erasteel 2025-FR . Negotiations on the employment protection plan will begin on 12 November, with the first layoffs planned for April 2026. The CGT union is actively involved, denouncing the decision as brutal and incomprehensible. Negotiations on the employment safeguard plan are ongoing.

The company plans to discontinue two of its three activities - conventional high-speed steel production and recycling of batteries and refinery catalysts - due to intense global price competition and significant overcapacity, particularly from Asian producers. Erasteel will concentrate solely on powder metallurgy high-speed steels.

Founded in 1960, Erasteel specialises in high-speed steels and advanced metallurgical technologies. The company has production sites in France, Sweden, and China, employing 850 people worldwide.
