Description
Hippogroup has initiated collective dismissal procedures affecting approximately 100 workers at Rome's Capannelle hippodrome as the facility faces operational crisis. Ministry of Agriculture funding cuts from €4.5 million to €3.6 million have drastically reduced spending capacity, creating unsustainable conditions for the custodian managing the historic horse racing venue.
Rome Municipality must communicate to the ministry by November 30 whether Capannelle can host the 2026 racing season. The venue has been "relegated" for failing to complete required ministry interventions, resulting in reduced financing. The 2026 Trotting Derby has already transferred to Turin, representing significant loss of national prestige.
Sports Councilor promised resolving accumulated €20 million debt from previous concessionaire, noting four companies participating in European tender conferences concluding end-November. The complex procedure is necessary for hippodrome rebirth with private investments amid ongoing government sector cuts.
The municipality requested Hippogroup continue 2026 management under identical conditions pending new operator identification expected January 2027, far beyond ministry deadline. Reduced resources mean fewer races, diminished attractiveness, lower revenues, and employment crisis affecting permanent and seasonal staff.
