Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The German mattress retailer Matratzen Direct headquartered in Cologne filed for insolvency in March 2025. The retailer sells under the brand MFO Matratzen. All 97 stores and the online shop will be closed by the end of 2025, affecting 300 employees. No investor could be found for a restructuring.
Over the course of the year 2025, the number of stores had already been reduced from 124 to 97. Decreased demand in the sector caused financial problems for the company for years and they had to undergo insolvency proceedings once before, in 2017. The company cited inflationary pressure in light of the heating cost crisis and Germany's green transition as a deterrence.
