Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The four-star Senator Hotel in Marbella has issued an Employment Redundancy File (ERE) for 107 employees, and the Andalusian Regional Government has stepped in to mediate this labor dispute. The mediation aims to resolve the conflict arising from the termination of the lease agreement between the hotel’s former operator, Hoteles Playa, and the property owner on 31 October. Following the lease’s expiry, Hoteles Playa initiated an ERE, leaving the establishment closed pending renovation before its reopening under the Meliá brand in 2027.
Responding to workers’ appeals, the Andalusian Minister for Employment has convened all parties to a meeting in Seville on Monday, 17 November. The session, chaired by the President of the Andalusian Labour Relations Council (CARL) will seek a negotiated settlement to prevent the mass layoffs.
The hotel’s staff, who have been staging a sit-in at the premises since 31 October, are calling for the “subrogation” of their contracts or the conversion of the ERE into a temporary layoff (ERTE) linked to refurbishment works. Unions have welcomed the government’s intervention, emphasising the need for “responsibility and commitment” from all sides. The workers have pledged to maintain their protest until Monday’s meeting, after which they will decide in assembly whether to end or continue their occupation depending on the outcome of the negotiations.
Updated, 1 DEC 2025: Negotiations over the ERE at the four-star Hotel Senator in Marbella with the new operator, Meliá Hotels International have ended without agreement, meaning the termination of contracts for 107 employees will take effect on 16 December. The process, initiated in September by the former operator Hoteles Playa, concludes 55 days of talks marked by multiple extensions and failed mediation attempts, including the ones by the Andalusian Regional Government.
