Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Woolworth, a German variety-discount chain, has entered the Slovak market with the opening of its first store in Bratislava, establishing its foothold for regional expansion. The retailer plans to scale rapidly, targeting up to 20 new stores per year across Slovakia in the upcoming phase.
The Bratislava outlet marks a strategic move for Woolworth, which intends to replicate its non-food discount format—covering home goods, clothing, toys and seasonal items—across both Bratislava and regional centres. Analysts say the timing aligns with consumers’ growing sensitivity to price and value.
Behind this rollout is Woolworth’s broader European ambition: the chain currently operates in multiple markets and views Slovakia as a key growth region for its expansion in Central Europe. The opening in Slovakia follows earlier moves into neighbouring markets, signaling the company’s intention to establish a dense network of stores.
Retail experts note that while the discount segment in Slovakia is already competitive, Woolworth’s strong store-footprint strategy and broad assortment could challenge existing players. However, success will depend on securing appropriate locations, logistics and local supplier partnerships.
