Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 10 November 2025, the automotive supplier Swoboda plans to close its site in Schorndorf, Baden-Württemberg, by mid-2026. Around 140 employees will be affected. The site serves as a sales and development center, and its capacities will be redistributed to other locations.
The company cites high cost pressure and declining competitiveness as reasons for the closure. Talks with the works council about a social plan are currently underway, as Swoboda expresses its commitment to not resort to direct dismissals. Additionally, the company is looking into possibilities to engage some of the affected employees at their other German locations.
The company employs more than 3,500 people worldwide at twelve locations in six countries.
