Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 4 November 2025, the German automotive supplier Mahle plans to cut a mid-three-digit number of jobs in Germany. Worldwide, the company intends to cut around 1,000 jobs.
The largest number of job cuts is expected to affect Stuttgart. The CEO cites weak market conditions for the automotive and supplier industries, the phase-out of combustion engines, U.S. tariffs, and competition with China as reasons for the cuts.
According to Mahle, talks with employee representatives are now set to begin. Most of the reductions are expected to be achieved through severance and early retirement programs.
Mahle employs around 10,000 people in Germany and 67,700 worldwide.
Between July 2024 and July 2025, Mahle has already eliminated 600 positions, which is also reported in the ERM events database Mahle 2025 - DE.
