Description

The Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, a public research organisation operating in the field of environmental science and monitoring, has initiated cooperation negotiations with the plans to dismiss 80 staff and reduced working time of another 25 employees. In addition, no new recruitments are conducted to replace retiring staff and temporary contracts are reduced.

The measures are part of a broader fiscal adjustment programme running from 2026 to 2029, with personnel reductions planned to be completed by 2028.

The cooperation negotiations follow government budget cuts, whereby the institute’s’ finances will drop by 17% by 2028 as compared to the 2025 level.

Syke is a government environmental research body employing approximately 700 experts and researchers across its units in Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä and Oulu.
