Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 23 October 2025, the German hospital group Brüderklinikum Julia Lanz is planning to close most of the departments at their hospital called "Theresienkrankenhaus" in Mannheim by the end of 2027. Up to 350 employees will be affected by this decision. All departments that are not being shut down are planned to be moved to the Diakonissen hospital in Mannheim.
The hospital's operator cites rising operating costs, expenses related to digitalisation, and a lack of funding as the reasons for the closure. Negotiations with social partners regarding a social plan are expected to begin in October.
The umbrella brand, Brüderklinikum Julia Lanz, combines the Theresienkrankenhaus and the Diakonissen Hospital as a hospital network within the BBT Group in Mannheim.
Updated, 10/02/2026:
After the conclusion of negotiations, a social plan has now been agreed for the two hospitals in Mannheim. At both locations, the Theresienkrankenhaus and the Diakonissen Hospital, a total of 194 dismissals are planned. The number of compulsory redundancies was reduced through the negotiation process. In addition, the social plan includes provisions to safeguard the employment of the remaining staff. It is not clear how many employees left voluntarily already. Employees from nearly all areas are affected, including functional departments such as the kitchen, cleaning services, and administrative staff. By the end of 2027 at the latest, all medical and non‑medical departments at the Theresienkrankenhaus are to be closed or transferred to the Diakonissen Hospital.
