Description
The Swedish state is expanding the prison facility in Vä, outside of Kristianstad in Southern Sweden. So far, more than 100 new staff members have been recruited by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service to work at the facility. Before the prison is finished, it is expected to create another 300 jobs.
The prison in Vä will, after the expansion, become Sweden’s largest prison, with a capacity of 700 inmates. Construction of the expansions has begun, and the first prisoners are expected to be placed in the expanded facilities in 2026. The construction project as a whole is expected to be finished in 2028.
Before the expansion, the prison in Vä had approximately 120 staff. With the additional workforce, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service will become the municipality of Kristianstad's largest single employer.
