Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 10 October 2025, the German manufacturer of domestic appliances BSH Hausgeräte announced plans to cut over 1,400 jobs by spring of 2028. The company will close its factories in Bretten (Baden-Wurttemberg), where stoves and extractor hoods are manufactured, and Nauen (Brandenburg), where washing machines are manufactured. Due to the closures, 980 jobs in Bretten will be lost by the end of the first quarter of 2028, and 440 jobs in Nauen by the end middle of 2027.
The company stated that the job reductions were necessary as the market situation for home appliances in Germany had not improved. BSH faced shrinking markets and increasing pressure from competitors.
To reach a fair and socially responsible solution for the planned job reductions, BSH wants to start negotiations with the works council soon. The works council and German Metalworkers' Union (IG Metall) have strongly criticized the company for the latest announcements which came at a surprise to both.
Already in 2024, BSH had announced to cut 450 jobs BSH Haushaltsgeräte 2024 - DE. Only at the end of September 2025, parent company Bosch had also announced further jobs cuts at its German sites Bosch 2025 - DE.
