Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Phone House, an Spanish electronics retail franchise, has announced an Empleoyment Redundancy File (ERE) affecting 134 workers across Spain, where nearly 100 of them are based in Jerez (Cádiz, Andalusia). The ERE has been presented due to what the company describes as a continued "serious negative economic situation" and associated organisational and production-related challenges.
The formal consultation period is scheduled to begin on 3 October 2025. The negotiating committee will be composed of 12 worker representatives: 9 from UGT and 3 from Fetico, based on union representation in the affected workplaces. UGT has requested that the company notify the Labour Authority on the same day the consultation period begins. Unions have strongly criticised this ERE, warning of the substantial impact on local employment in Jerez, where the majority of the job losses will occur.
Previous internal restructurings were recorded in the ERM database in 2020 The Phone House 2020-ES and 2023 The Phone House 2023-ES, affecting 435 and 200 workers, respectively.
