Description
AT&S, headquartered in Leoben, Austria, has inaugurated Europe's first IC substrate production facility, with a view to reducing reliance on Asian supply chains. Despite previous job cuts, the new facility has created 420 jobs, with the potential to exceed 500. The €500 million innovation centre combines manufacturing and R&D and will support both AT&S's headquarters and Europe's microelectronics sector. While large-scale production remains in Malaysia and China, the Leoben site focuses on research and small-series manufacturing.
This strategic move is a response to the intense global competition for key technologies. Social partners and management have emphasised the strategic importance of microelectronics, calling for increased EU investment beyond the current scope of the European Chips Act. In FY2023, AT&S generated significant revenues, reinforcing its position as a leading high-tech player in the global IC substrate market.
