Description
Correos, Spain’s public postal operator, is implementing a voluntary early retirement scheme affecting 451 civil servants—approximately 15% of its 3,000 civil service workforce. The initiative, part of a broader internal restructuring plan, seeks to rejuvenate an ageing workforce whose average age is 52. Targeting mainly those born before 31 December 1966, the measure will see eligible employees leave the company before the end of 2025. Correos employs over 50,000 workers in total, though the vast majority fall under the category of 'labour personnel' rather than civil servants.
Out of 663 applicants, 451 have been granted incentivised leave based on criteria such as age, length of service, psychophysical aptitude, and organisational restructuring needs. Of these, 118 cases have been approved due to medical or psychophysical conditions, while 333 were authorised strictly on age grounds. UGT has claimed credit for expanding the programme by lowering the qualifying age threshold, thereby increasing the number of approved exits by 106 compared to initial estimates.
Correos already experienced a business expansion plan in 2023, with the creation of 7757 new jobs Correos 2023-ES
