Description
Dansk Flygtningehjælp (Danish Refugee Council), a humanitarian organisation based in Denmark, has announced that it will lay off 650 employees globally as part of a major restructuring prompted by a significant funding crisis.
This follows the loss of its second-largest donor, USAID - The United States Agency for International Development -, which previously provided 20% of its budget. Almost 100 positions will be cut at the headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark Dansk Flygtningehjælp 2025-DK, with additional reductions in Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland.
The cuts come on top of 1,300 layoffs since February 2025.
The restructuring will also result in the closure of operations in six countries: Burundi, Central African Republic, Georgia, Kosovo, Mexico, and Tanzania. Moving forward, DRC’s country programmes will be managed through regional hubs in Amman, Nairobi, and Dakar, under more centralised control from Copenhagen.
The organisation emphasised that these changes are necessary to ensure financial sustainability and continued support for displaced populations.
Founded in 1956, the Danish Refugee Council operates in 28 countries and remains one of the key actors in global humanitarian assistance.
