European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Owens-Illinois, an American company that is the largest manufacturer of glass containers, announced the suppression of 164 jobs because of the closure of its site in Vergèze on the 8 of April.
This decision is in line with its "Fit to Win" strategy that plans the reduction of its effects in Europe. In France, it's going to affect more than 556 jobs across the country. The French trade union CGT denounced this decision that put emphasis on profit, sacrificing human beings.
The CGT and the communist deputies called for a mobilization to counter this decision. Especially that the company made a turnover of 800 million euros in 2024 just in France.
On Friday April 11, Mayor Pascale Fortunat-Deschamps received at the town hall the inter-union of the Owens-Illinois (OI) glassworks, whose closure was announced. Representatives of the CFE-CGC, FO, and CGT unions appeared united, united, and determined to defend their company and save the 164 jobs under threat. The mayor reaffirmed her and the Gard department support to the trade unionists.
