European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Corning and Saint-Gobain Groups are cutting a total of 160 jobs across their subsidiaries in France. At Eurokera’s Château-Thierry factory, 83 of the 295 employees will be laid off. Another of it's subsidiary Keraglass, is also cutting 77 out of 240 workers in Bagneaux-sur-Loing. The companies are struggling to remain competitive against Chinese manufacturers, who do not face the same environmental regulations on arsenic use and are not subject to import taxes. Additionally, the fragile economic conditions in the industry have exacerbated financial difficulties.
Eurokera, which manufactures glass-ceramic induction plates, is directly impacted by Keraglass’s struggles, as the latter is responsible for an earlier stage in the production process. In response to the job cuts, the entire Château-Thierry production line has gone on strike for a week, an unprecedented move for the site. Meanwhile, workers at Keraglass have been on strike for four weeks. Tensions remain high, as Eurokera's management, trade unions, and employees have not yet reached an agreement on a job-saving plan.
