Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Audi, the German car manufacturer of the Volkswagen Group, plans to cut 7,500 jobs in Germany by the end of 2029, primarily in indirect departments such as administration and development.
This decision is driven by falling sales figures, weak demand—particularly in China—and delays in model launches due to software issues. The goal of these measures is to increase efficiency and improve profitability. The job cuts are expected to save around one billion euros in labour costs annually. Of the 7,500 positions, 6,000 are to be eliminated by 2027, with the remaining cuts to occur by the end of 2029. The specific locations for the job reductions have not yet been disclosed.
A “future agreement” has been reached with employee representatives, ensuring that job reductions will be carried out without compulsory redundancies. The existing job security agreement, which previously ran until 2029, has been extended until 2033. A social plan has also been put in place, offering redundancy programs and maintaining collectively agreed salaries. Additionally, financial cuts, such as a reduction in variable remuneration components, are planned to prevent further layoffs.
Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, also announced the gradual reduction of 35,000 jobs in Germany earlier this year Volkswagen 2025 - DE.
