Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Casa an international retail chain specialised in home decoration, has declared bankruptcy of its Belgian branch. All 63 stores will be closed, affecting all 540 employees.
Growing competition with online stores led to reduced income in combination with increasing (wage) costs, which ultimately led to the closure of the branch. At the time of writing, a curator has been appointed to look at potential takeover options. No formal statements were made on decisions related to the other international branches in France, Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg, or the Netherlands.
Casa applied to the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) in September 2025 to support the company’s restructuring process and mitigate the adverse effects for affected workers. A decision on the application is still pending.
