European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
MA France, a subsidiary of the Italian group CLN, has entered judicial liquidation, resulting in the redundancy of 280 permanent employees and 120 temporary workers. The company plans to relocate its operations to Turkey, where a new factory is set to open in 2025.
Stellantis, which accounts for 80% of the factory’s revenue, refused to pay higher fees after production costs increased by 12%. The closure was therefore was attributed to a lack of competitiveness and profitability, despite Stellantis reporting record-high revenues this year.
Employees in several Stellantis factories have protested including those in Poissy, Hordain, and Luton (UK). The majority of employees continue to demand a more substantial redundancy package, aiming for €70,000 instead of the €15,000 currently offered, an increase of €5,000 from the initial proposal. Workers justify their demands by highlighting their age, skill level, and the difficulties many over 50 face in finding new employment. As a result, employees have occupied the factory for months, vowing to stay until their demands are met. Furthermore, the limited internal redeployment opportunities offered by MA France have been criticised for being insufficient and often located far from workers’ homes. Nonetheless, 84 of the 280 employees have reluctantly accepted the company's terms due to financial pressure. Tragically, one employee, who had worked at MA France for 30 years, set himself on fire in front of representatives of the group. This act was reportedly driven by financial stress and the devastating impact of losing his job.
MA France currently employs 400 workers across the country.
