Description
Yara Tertre, a Belgian subsidiary of Yara International, has announced its intention to restructure operations at its Tertre site. The proposed transformation involves the closure of the ammonia production unit due to persistent financial difficulties, volatile energy prices, high maintenance costs, and increasing environmental regulations. The company plans to shift focus towards the production of premium nitrate fertilisers and industrial nitrogen chemicals, aiming to enhance profitability and prepare for future decarbonisation. The site would source ammonia externally and produce 600 000 tonnes of nitrate fertilisers and 250 000 tonnes of high-value industrial products annually. If confirmed, the restructuring could result in the dismissal of approximately 115 employees, while preserving over 200 jobs. The announcement marks the beginning of the mandatory information and consultation process under Belgian collective dismissal legislation.
Updated, 24/11/2025:
Number of dismissals was reduced significantly after Renault-Law procedure. The ultimate number was lowered to a maximum of 61 employees to be laid off. Of these 25 may leave via an early-retirement scheme and 10 internal positions are open to surplus staff. There is a voluntary exit programme present as well. As the second phase of the Renault-Law procedure begins, negotiations are now focusing on how to further reduce the social impact on the dismissed workers.
